Dayton 2008 drive in and check-in

Even with high gas prices Shawn and I made the trek to Dayton this year.
I ended up forgetting to buy an advance ticket for Hamvention and by the time I remembered the online ordering was closed but I noticed tickets could be purchased at the Hara arena box office or Universal Radio up until Thursday. So on our way through Columbus we stopped at Universal Radio, much to my surprise they didn’t have any tickets and had sent them back about a week ago. On the bright side I ran into Rich WB3JLK and chatted with him for a few minutes. Shortly after that we were back on the road. Near downtown Columbus we got caught up in some traffic due to a car fire.

It was right around that point Shawn’s friend from Michigan called and during the conversation she offered to pick up a ticket for me since she was already at the arena setting up a flea market space. Needless to say that was incredibly nice of her and saved me five dollars. The drive seemed to go by incredibly quick, and soon we were in Dayton…

Due to a miscommunication about hotel reservations we ended up at Motel 6 which I booked online a few months ago for around $40 a night. When we arrive the woman at the desk insists that I pay double. When I advise her of my confirmation she tells me “the rates have gone up” even after going back out to the vehicle and trying to show here the printout of the confirmation which she won’t even look at it and tells me I would have to speak to the owner in the morning. Finding that totally unacceptable I go outside, get in the vehicle and call the motel 6 reservation line which then gives me the number for guest relations. While I was on the phone with guest relations Shawn drove around to the other hotels in the vicinity to see if they had a cancellations. After about 30 minutes on the phone with guest relations the owner of that Motel 6 called me and advised me he would honor the rates and if there was a problem at the front desk to have them call him. Of course when we arrived back at motel 6 the woman at the front desk was busy doing the same thing do another person. I felt compelled to speak up, I told the fellow that I had contacted guest relations, spoke to the owner and was told he would honor the price and if they had any questions call him. Then she tells me it’s her next to last day working there and the owner is just in the other room. She disappears for a moment, then she honors the original price for both of us. By the time it was our turn she didn’t seem to care and gave us two key cards and took our money. Oh well this place is a dump but it’s cheap, I won’t be staying here next year especially for $80 a night.
We will be meeting up with a friend of Shawn’s tonight and the Penguins play Philly tonight hope fully this place has the game on since this motel doesn’t get Versus…

Off to Dayton!

I’m off to Dayton more to come…
